JaySic – Matador

March 10, 20212 min read

• Spanish ballad in-between two heavy drop
• Interesting dynamic made with fast and slow rhythms
• Simpler formula, creative application

It has become an antic for me to often joke with my Spanish colleagues, who are naturally biased on reviewing artists from their nation… Well would you look at me now, reviewing “Matador”! Thankfully, despite the obvious title of this production, JaySic actually hails from the colder tundras of Finland. There has been a solid number of talented upcoming aliases from that particular region recently, such as the likes of Winning Team, DANÊL ( who rightfully earned a ninety plus given last month) and Samlight.

JaySic didn’t waste any time convincing me with an intricate setup, going straight for the classic and simple Big Room production structure that is often supported by the esteemed Nik Cooper. Its first drop strikes strongly, with a Blasterjaxx inspired melodic sequence and characterized by usual snares and FXs. The fills give their own flavour here without being generic, but if I was being nitpick-y on a certain day, I would prefer that there could be more sauce to this pasta, thus differentiating from the usual schematics at work here.

The breakdown demonstrates the last grievance I made, turning into predictable considering the title. A lovely ballad with a clear Spanish influence plays over, with the familiar ensemble of trumpets and percussion joining the performance. Here I would say that the bespoke creator created a curious and ethnic atmosphere, switching from the dynamic sequence to moments of peace. The transition is smooth and unhindered, as there’s plenty of time to enjoy the elegance of “Matador” before heading for the robust drop finale.

Sometimes, simplicity is the key. The Finnish producer put together an age-old Spanish ballad and a Maxximized style Big Room template with proficiency, and the result is one of the most amusing festival tunes I’ve heard in a while!
