• Dark, eerie atmosphere with Halloween elements
• Frenetic, almost obsessive melody
• Experimental take, available also as “Ice Mix” (Slower version)
Well, this song is from the previous year and I am making a huge exception to our motif of not discussing any contemporary releases older than 14 days (in order to give more space to recent releases, exclusive of throwbacks). The reason is simply because “Breathe”, which released in September of 2020, has been voted as the prime candidate for this month’s community favourite. Safe to say, it’s an extremely interesting production from the esoteric act Mundo.
This name should probably be new to you, as it was for me: the artist has so far self-published three instrumentals (on Spotify). There’s “Breathe”, an alternative edit with the tag of “Ice Mix” and the more emotional of a début “Falling Deep”. All of them deserve to be mentioned singularly, but I will focus on the song whose popularity made me discover this upcoming producer in the first place.
Contrary to what you might have pictured from its title, a Halloween-esque mood is struck that immediately is set alongside a frenetic lead: this was an impressive start to begin with! If there’s an artist of similar calibre, I would say it would be Dimatik for his intense bassline, blinking an eye to the Psy-Trance domain. Mundo builds up an intriguing cacophony of hard-hitting melody, made of creepy laughs, hard kicks and abrupt changes to the riffs. There is even a sudden approach to minimalism for couple of sequences, where the low-end is allowed to perform on its own accord. This loop keeps drilling in my head even as I write about it, making sure that it stays far from being monotonous. Surprisingly, I love this portion, although I got tired of the laugh being utilized as a fill, making it rather difficult and overwhelming to handle its dominance.
“Breathe” falls into its own category of experimental attitude, as “Ice Mix” is a more polished version a listener might be expecting firsthand. Nonetheless, it’s for this crude and out-of-the-box ideas that I consider searching for newer names in the scene, fundamental. I have discovered a talented creator with a fresh mentality and his desire to change things. There’s this certain difficulty in ascertaining the genre for this exemplar work, indicating that we have found something unheard of before.
