• Wait for the second drop
• Happy at first, then takes a darker turn
• Cheesy vocal, avoidable
As I listened to “Midnight” up until the first drop, I found myself somewhat disinterested in this Happy Hyperpop rendition. Sure, the BPMs were soaring, but it lacked that adrenaline kick I was yearning for.
This intriguing release from Spinnin’ Records, featuring the Big Room duo Blasterjaxx and the collaborative efforts of SAYMYNAME and Nitti Gritti (SAYMYNITTI, genius), starts off on a playful note. Embracing the new Hyperpop vibes, a somewhat cheesy vocal sets the stage for the first, melodic drop. While undeniably danceable, my expectations were higher considering the caliber of artists involved.
However, “Midnight” soon took a surprising turn. After two minutes of enjoyable music, the final drop emerges as a Dark Big Room slam with Techno influences, distorting the innocent vibes of the previous section in a bold and rather intriguing manner.
Needless to say, I wholeheartedly approve of this decision. “Midnight” proves to be an excellent, if somewhat underrated, collaboration. We could definitely benefit from more shape-shifting collabs like this one!
