Lights Out for BIJOU’s G-House Style: a review of “Lights Out”

March 19, 20242 min read

After more than a decade of dedication to the genre, BIJOU has announced his final EP. But fear not, this isn’t the end of a career; it’s simply a moment to reflect on and celebrate his consolidated G-House style before transitioning to a new, brighter vibe.

I recently immersed myself in “Lights Out,” and what I discovered was nothing short of marvelous. BIJOU’s experience and talent shine through in this 18-minute journey, seamlessly blending darker, old-school vibes with an elegant glimpse into the future, all while maintaining stunning sound design quality. An interesting detail worth noting is the inclusion of several interludes featuring heartfelt messages from friends like AC Slater, Burman, and Dr. Fresch. These interludes give a sense of bidding farewell with heart and passion, paying respect to the genre while mixing in uplifting messages and house bangers throughout the narrative.

So, how does this final goodbye fare? Here are my top picks:

Mercy (ft. AK KENNY)
80/100

With its shape-shifting main lead, decisive vocals, and relentless distortion, “Mercy” shows no mercy indeed. The drop is an experiment in itself, with just the right amount of innovation. Each bar undergoes a transformation, offering a futuristic twist on Tech House. Darker than expected, it’s a gift from the pair.

All Over Me (ft. KLP)
82/100

Featuring a distinctive metallic lead, “All Over Me” is pure Dirty Bass House goodness. The track maintains a dark undertone in its breakdown before unleashing an explosive final drop to elevate the energy. The aggressive tone and pumping kicks make it a shining example of professional and energetic Bass House.

Firestarter (ft. Julia Temos and Corrupt)
89/100

Taking a departure from G-House, “Firestarter” ventures into a gray area where Techno meets House, resulting in a unique creation. Enhanced by Julia Temos’s solid vocal performance, the track utilizes lasers and an explosive bassline to showcase its dynamic personality, perfect for hypnotic club shows. In my opinion, it’s the standout hit of the EP, boasting a clean vocal, catchy drop, solid sound design, and that festival-ready attitude that drives crowds wild.
