• Bass-Tech House hybrid with twists
• Catchy bassline, as expected
• Minimal attitude to emphasize the rhythm
After mentioning him for multiple times on our blog-space, especially on the artist focus series a few months back, ELYX has ranked upwards on the support and recognition ranks since then. The immensely talented youngster has proved himself as a promising producer whose skill-set didn’t go unheard, finally gaining the golden opportunity of being a part of the leading Musical Freedom. The Dutch imprint has been vouching heavily for fresh names on House music frontiers, and this newest release found its perfect spot up there.
Dexterously blurring the lines between Bass and Tech House, the Italian act has synchronized and struck upon a hallmark that operates on minimal tendencies, energized atmosphere reminiscent of peak-time Jackin’ House blending with modernistic attributes of Bass House. While this format has gained much traction over the last couple of years, few notable others such as Cheyenne Giles (who adamantly terms it as “Big Room Bounce”), BYOR and many more who also represent the Musical Freedom franchise these days.
“Control” adheres to the standards described above, sharing elements that are common in both genres but fine-tuned upon with a successful vocal in the drop, and a booming and catchy bassline meant to offend your neighbors with its well-balanced intensity. Remember our review of “Bad Producer”? ELYX decided to use the vox snippets so mentioned in a similar fashion, and this technique is often observed in this domain. There is also a nifty switch of low-ends, if one might have noticed around the, bringing a Brazilian Bass flavour to the already sizzling recipe. Sticking to simplistic rhythms and patterns, the breakdown continues without introducing a lot on the platter: effective here, as the entirety of the track intends to work with a stripped-down cadence. There’s also the trademark detuned, pitch-variating saw riff that hits around for introductory bars of the drop section, and is a familiar ingredient that has appeared many times on the said creator’s discography.
While there is many thing to be admired on the technical aspects of this record, one thing remains concrete: the hard-work this budding personality has poured. Pandemic happened, club-compatible tracks saw an all-time high decline in popularity as many jumped ships to popular categories of EDM, yet ELYX here kept a laser-focus on reaching a goal so many aspire of, day in-and-out. Our congratulations and best wishes extend to him, as we hope to see him as a regular on other prominent labels scouting for up-and-coming aliases.
