ELYX x Hawk Ft. Young Jae – Ride It

July 10, 20204 min read

• Cover of the hit “Ride It” by Regard
• Strong display of signature sounds
• Simplistic yet dynamic sounding

I have to reveal the fact that in my three years of writing reviews, I have never been so curiously involved in behind the scenes of any of the tracks I have previously talked about as this one today. But let me dispel away any undue bias that would arise through by admitting this very fact, because I prohibit stretching myself to pen down any favouritism, and only talk mostly about creations which genuinely fascinate at the end of the day. That being said, let me introduce you to today’s subject of this article and its creators.

This production has been revealed by the up and coming imprint Actuation music, a brand for whom I have genuine admiration for keeping such a quality presentation. Among their noteworthy roster, ELYX caught my attention last month, as I already talked about in my recent “Focus”.
His EP “40” has suitably displayed his prowess to create simplistic and quirky instrumentals, showing-off a strong and recognisable signature club-y sound. The Florence based solo act paired up with Brazilian uprising talent Hawk, who specialises in making vibrant Deep House genre, and has acquired pivotal amount of plays through his latest songs such as “Heathens” and “Falling”. The vocal duties has been acquired by Young Jae, who provided a catchy voice for this.

Now, as some may have guessed it, this composition is a cover of the chart-topping hit of “Ride It” from Kosovo native Regard, which was itself one based on the original by leading British R&B icon Jay Sean. Usually I don’t prefer remakes, but as I stated earlier, this particular homage has an irresistible energy and freshness.

Last month, during one of our casual talks, ELYX presented me with the prototype version, which he incredulously crafted in a matter of three or four hours. Hawk later adjoined a Slap House segment and some other elements, which takes the listener (so it did for me) by total surprise. The breakdown is lead by Young Jae’s voice and high-strings. The auto-tuned tonality along with Trap snares (which later come in the riser) leaves a lively impression of the mentioned genre. Unleashing with a striking and shrill saw synths, the drop tunes in with cleverly placed vocal snippets, raw House-y kicks and emphatic FXs such as laser shots. The combination so drafted is best experienced when heard, but with this arrangement, devil is in the details!

To end this specific write-up, “Ride It” sounds ostentatious without being intricate, and yet maintains originality. Congratulations is in due to the trio involved in this successful project, as the single continues amassing more listens and appreciation as we speak!
