Revealed Recordings presents Miami Festival EP 2020

March 14, 20207 min read

Another year, another sampler. 2020 is the year of Coronavirus and the meetings in Miami Music Week are essentially not happening (considering that Ultra is cancelled), but, luckily, we have the samplers! They are online, they can’t damage us… Unless in rare cases.

Overall
66/100

Jokes apart, like every year we put our dirty hands on Revealed’s mini-EP for the Miami Event. You should know that it’s simply a method for “scouting” fans’ tastes using minor names and unusual sounds, so, expectations weren’t high.
Nonetheless, we had a good time with some releases, there are a couple of names that confirmed their talent and another couple that shouldn’t be there… But yeah, the sampler definitively deserves a listening. We doubt that many people will opt for a second round, though: there isn’t very much to find here.

A particularly annoying detail was the high presence of underground bass house tunes: Revealed has headed towards an unnatural direction this year, targeting a genre that has never been appreciated by his fans, but it’s evidently trending. Debatable choice.

Mo Falk & Siks – Lie Mashine
67/100

Why is the title misspelt?!
Following the recent trend, “Lie Mashine” starts off with a catchy “oldschool” funky segment. The melody leading to a fine vocal chop drop with a future bouncy vibe is an expected move from these two names, but we appreciated the smoothness and the stunning sound design. Definitively a good one, but this kind of bass house is like a fish out of water here: there are plenty of more suitable labels around, from MF to STMPD…

Crossnaders – Destress
74/100

Another well-known name: Crossnaders, famous for their hard bass hitting tracks. Analysing what we have in our hands right now, “Destress” introduces itself with a low-pitched vocal emerging out with a impressive surrounding bass. The song is completely built around that element: risky and unbalanced you may say, but that was extremely creative!

DJ Junior – Wrangler
78/100

We’ve seen many positive comments about “Wrangler”, compared to Ryos/Dubvision quality progressive house! In fact, surprise surprise, it’s “””””””co-produced””””””” by Dubvision!
The duo sets out its stall early on, using a promising melody setting the intentions from the beginning. “Wrangler” makes way for a more anthemic synth melody in the breakdown which perfectly compliments the track’s musical elements. It’s a sweet tune that clashes harshly with the aggressive title, and probably it’s the one you’ll like the most if you are looking for “classic Revealed” vibes. Honestly, we didn’t click with the melody.

Julian Snijder – Stuck Inside
74/100

Julian Snijder is a big mystery: his discography consists of just a collab with Magnificence and a recent remix of “In My Arms”, both on Revealed. His first solo release begins with a futuristic wobbling synth fusing well with the calm vocal, clearly demonstrating a refined stylistic approach. A nice drop, blending progressive house with something more groovy and oldschool, surprised us! There is potential here, “Stuck Inside” was a positive experience!

Lemarroy – Groovin
40/100

As the title suggests, there is groove… Maybe too much. After a promising intro (with a vocal chop melody and a little bit of a trap influence), the drop begins to play, leaving us with a bittersweet aftertaste. Messy structure, noisy attitude, difficult to grasp (even if the Dirty Dutch influence was a good touch): this kind of bass house doesn’t fit at all here and doesn’t entertain.

Distrion & Vargenta ft. Micah Martin – All We Ever Wanted
78/100

Vargenta is once again back on Revealed, paired with another rentrèe: Future House producer Distrion. Their team-up with Micah Martin, the only vocalist of the sampler, hits up straight with powerful lyrics and a magical atmosphere. The whole structure was composed of a catchy typical Vargenta-sounding progressive house background, mixed with a bouncy influence by Distrion. That’s a quality collab with two names that demonstrated their high-level skills, mixing their styles in a 50:50 balance. The melody, personally, didn’t put too much stamina on the table for us, but the idea remains very good. Vargenta and Distrion deserve to be on Revealed, that was a beautiful confirmation.

Linka & Gregor Potter – Resistance
52/100

This was a unique one in the whole sampler, a huge “hir or miss”: unfortunately, we felt it was extremely confusing, with too many elements altogether. Starting off with rapping style vocals, “Resistance” immediately showed off its fast-paced attitude. Then, the drop segment totally disappointed us… It still deserves a listening, the concept is very unpredictable, but we have no idea why these chaotic bass house tunes are in the EP. They don’t fit with Revealed, either with our tastes.

22Bullets & The Golden Army – Tribal
45/100

Psy-Trance is a genre we are often finding on Revealed, and mixing it with tribal sounds seems an intelligent strategy, but something went wrong. Considering that 22Bullets is the biggest name of the sampler, his part was extremely under our expectations. The build-up sounds heavenly: The Golden Army mastered once again the orchestral elements, and then we have a basic psy-drop with some tribal drums, repetitive and “empty”… We should learn to not have excessive expectations regarding these collabs…
