Ben Powis – The Way You Get

July 28, 20203 min read

• Clean and catchy arrangements
• Contrasting breakdown and drop segments
• Influenced from the Twisted House style

Among various other splendid up and coming artists who warrant our attention with their talent for engineering slick instrumentals, we today have another individual who has been efficiently successful with that. While browsing through the submission list, we struck across Ben Powis, a young talent in the upbeat Future House genre with a hallmark to look for. His latest single “The Way You Get” blends ingredients of well-chosen sounds, without being too ostentatious and boasting like many other House producers. This being said, lets find out what makes this composition worth talking about!

As the custom requires, so shall the introduction begin. Based in America, Ben Powis commenced his career almost two years ago, with his début being an unofficial remix for “Say What You Wanna” from the German veteran Tujamo, and surprisingly it is a melodic Future Bass spin on the original. However, just after that, he took a turn for Future bounce, crafting his own bouncy and paced twist on the British powerhouse Curbi’s single “Feel”. His latest work was almost four months ago, a “hit-in-your-face” rendition of the rather sentimental and dreamy Slap House hit track “Not So Bad”. Aggressively layered with ricocheting synth riff, the arrangement and the groove of the instrumental reminded me of the Twisted House insignia, which is popularly known to the dance crowd thanks to heavyweight act Laidback Luke.

Designating a particular genre to today’s subject would be difficult enough (as you will hear), but Future House seemed correct for us. Nevertheless, the starting brings forth a recognizable vocal snippet (from a Splice pack), the breakdown creates a glimmering and hooking atmosphere for the listener. But don’t be misled by it, even if the polished blueprints head towards a contrary and amusing hook segment. And there comes the protagonist of this production, the brassy and animated instruments which have a very grabby effect from the moment it starts in the riser section. The drop operates on this and the minimal bassline, not falling out completely because of the accuracy and creative demeanor shown in sound-selection and the groove. It is subjective on whether there could be more participating elements to drive this beat further and keep it intriguing enough, but for us, it did a fine job of providing an odd and enjoyable segment without being repetitive.

With this as his solitary entrée in the industry, this has instated our faith for the mettle in his creation process. Definitely anxious on what Ben Powis has in store for us, whether it will be variant of this style or a different genre altogether? Only time will tell, with our best wishes to him for his future.
