Toothpick – Bust It

• Super entertaining dubstep tune
• Captivating vocal loop
• A wise balance between all the elements

“Bust It” is exactly what I needed during this cold, exhausting Tuesday morning. It’s a dubstep production full of surprises, starting from the artist’s stage name. A toothpick doesn’t really give out an aggressive vibe, in fact, most dubstep artists use “scary” titles like Virtual Riot, NGHTMRE, Slander, etc etc…

But as we all should have learned by now – never judge a book by its cover. Toothpick may be a “weak” name, but it can sure sting like a bee. “Bust It” is a banger, with a particular personality that I’m going to analyze right now.

First of all, a special mention to the vocal. It’s a bit repetitive, consisting of a simple loop and at first, I was thinking that it was saying some other (more vulgar) words, I hope I was not the only one! Apart from that, it manages to add a hypnotic and a not-boring taste to the breakdown.

The drop, then, pleasantly impressed me. I loved how Toothpick mixed a frenetic melody with a more emotional background structure, making them balance each other. He presented two opposite sides of dubstep at the same time, resulting in a fresh and particular final output. The crazy notes of the metallic lead, typical of hard trap, fit surprisingly well with slow, melancholic background chords. Simple idea, genial result. The percussions and the heavy basses complete the production, filling up the empty spaces with furthermore energy. I am particularly amazed by the melody, always unpredictable and intriguing, but the secret in “Bust It” is the stunning balance of all the elements.

Toothpick delighted me with an unusual composition, that mixes different vibes together. “Bust It” is a little gem of a genre we usually underestimate, but when we notice it, we never get disappointed. Give it a chance.
