Tom & Jame feat. Æmes – No Hard Feelings

May 6, 20192 min read

• Contrasting thoughts about the vocal
• Catchy, summerish, future bounce structure
• Capable of maintaining a personality

I wrote a lovely review about Tom & Jame collaboration “Warrior” two weeks ago, and it’s funny to see myself here again writing similar words. However, “No Hard Feelings” impressed me for a different reason: it is not an energetic tune that shows their signature aggressive Electro House structure, but rather a successful experiment.

The duo, after many prosperous releases on Revealed (“Find You“, “Clap“, “Rise” and “Buddha“, to name a few) are in a creative phase, with exotic vibes, hybrids with other genres and unexpected collabs.

In “No Hard Feelings” we are not talking about a futuristic approach, that’s Mike Williams-ish summer future bounce stuff, but I loved how the Dutch duo undoubtedly made this. They worked with Williams in 2017 (“Step Up“), so there is a chance that the Dutch talent might have influenced them here. Anyway, they still managed to infuse their style and personality into a concept that many other artists try, often with generic and forgettable results.

We have a rather standard breakdown, partially valorized by a good vocal by Æmes, partially ruined by an unnecessary amount of autotune... Then a sudden bouncy composition by Tom & Jame. The melody is catchy, the structure is nothing new, but their lead adds a confident unexpected personality to the output. It sounds refreshing, and “No Hard Feelings”, for me, can be a beautiful summer track, with the right dose of appeal and good vibes. It quickly gets stuck in the head.

I liked how Tom & Jame are moving around, keeping their style but exploring outside their comfort zone. I hope that more other artists will follow them, after seeing those good results!
