• A minimal yet effective approach
• Wholesome story: from a bootleg to an official release
• Bouncy and underground vibes
I really appreciate Musical Freedom’s strategy in the recent times: it’s one of the few Spinnin’ sub-labels that doesn’t stick to a single sound or a limited roster of artists but presents new talents and ideas in a steady rhythm, always keeping that dark and underground touch. This remix of “Alors On Danse” by Dubdogz (from Brazil) is an excellent example of what I’m saying.
The duo remixed the classic hit by Stromae (if you don’t know about it yet, please go check it out!) with a “delicate” infusion of bouncy brazilian basses, without changing too much of the original structure. Minimal, yet effective, job: “Alors On Danse” keeps all its original vibes, but it’s more “clubbish”… More dynamic.
I think they have had better releases (including two on Spinnin’, “Azkaban” and “Bass“). This rework is missing artifacts of their personality. A bit too minimal for my standards. Luckily, many people didn’t think the same, because after getting posted on a popular channel on YouTube, it got almost 110 MILLION streams. This caught the attention of many DJs, including Tiesto (who played it at Lollapalooza), that’s where Musical Freedom came into the picture, despite it being a one-year-old bootleg, they bought the rights from Stromae and released it last Friday.
This is a detail that I loved: MF engaged itself in a “complicated” release: old, with some rights to buy of a popular hit (which I’m guessing didn’t come cheap), already released. All of that just because they liked the bootleg. I wonder how many labels would do that. Dubdogz deserved this success and essential release because the remix works amazingly. The bassline is stuck in my head, and I loved how a great tune has been reworked: with intelligence, working on small details.
It’s a good story: most of the times, these bootlegs get lost on SoundCloud. Seeing one of them becoming official and redeeming it’s deserved recognition is a pleasure for me. I expect great things of Dubdogz!
