John Christian – Uno

May 4, 20193 min read

• Minimal yet effective structure
• Playful melody and rhythm
• Well-chosen components

Experimentation is the most quintessential thing in any form of art, including this very genre of Dance music. We have seen a lot of well-known heavyweights deviating from their usual style and trying out something outside their “comfort-zone“, or merely to say their usual production style. Today, we have one such artist who has been well-known for his tantalizing Big Room House records, the leading Dutchman John Christian. This time, he has deviated from his typical arrangements, and worked on a more Tech and House-y song. Named as “Uno“, the playful and underground vibes certainly gives this one an edge.

Talking about the prior releases, John Christian has already released one single this year, and another major collaboration with the native luminary Tiesto. This preceding joint-effort, titled as “Can You Feel It” became the part of the “Together EP”. This specific track is the result of this talented individuals teaming-up for the third time, and as expected, the end-product is yet again fantastic. Embedded with chiming and resounding drop synth-line, the ear-candy of a breakdown manages to keep the tension on-board. Laced with resonant components, this energetic Electro House work easily cuts itself as a powerful festival-friendly material.

Now heading back to our topic of discussion, the music initiates with a simple kick-clap pattern, as a major brass-horn and vocal snippet hit in. Along with that, a teasing and hooking melody takes the limelight. The minimal nature, along with the whimsical tone of the rhythm works even more efficiently as the bassline emerges. The following segment pumps even more stamina, introducing the wobbling and pronounced bass synths, giving the actual • . The combination of all these elements accentuates the cadence, enhancing the subtleties of it. While some may complain of the simplicity of the structure, however we found it quite groovy and compatible!

Summing up, it would be wise to say “Uno” is a well-composed experiment from John Christian. Our only complaint? The brevity. However, it may be fixed with an extended mix later. Nonetheless, this record definitely lives up to the expectations we kept.
