GRY – In Your Sleep

December 8, 20212 min read

• Elegant touch, with finer details
• Guitar solos in the back
• More than it meets the eye

Beforehand, I already had chance to analyze GRY’s involvement on “Now Or Never, featuring Thomas Gold and NEVVE: it was a delightful spin on Brazilian Bass’s schematics which received quite the score.

The London-based producer is back to Dharma, going all solo this time, and giving me an opportune to understand his style further. His latest tune “In Your Sleep” is more fashionable and delicate than his début release, albeit leaving behind a breadcrumb of details in its layout, if one is willing to focus on those. If listened in hastiness, it might appear plain generic, a risk the daunting GRY is willing to take, so he enriched the sound design with a fewer key elements.

Make sure to be absorbed by the guitar solos in the back, mixed in with the bouncy low-end therefore adding a lot of personality to the timbre. Sure, the vocal does the heavy lifting, but the final outcome stays balanced not forgetting the delicate elegant touch I mentioned earlier. Here, we don’t really have a drop, just a brief riff where the bassline intensifies; it’s not the kind of generalized cookie-cutter Slap House you might be imagining.

I found my experience rather entertaining once I devoted some patience on figuring out the details in the arrangement by GRY. A great release for Dharma!

“In Your Sleep” could be summarized from its album art – a sweet watercolor, slightly plain outlook that merges lowkey with intriguing details that makes it stand out.
