22DEADROSES – Butterflies

November 7, 20212 min read

• Genial idea; hardstyle kick in a deep house beat
• Delicate, mellow vocal performance
• Stimulating idea from a newcomer

I will start with this: the kick, is damn impressive. It’s this raw and thumping drum that hits hard in the guts with its powerful essence, and at the same time, clashes with the other elements. It does, because evidently, 22DEADROSES isn’t an seasoned hardstyle producer.

The Australian creator is rather specialized in the milder realms of house music, as you can easily guess when listening to the vocal. His earlier productions are calmer and serene, with signature softer vocals and the standard structure that comes with the style, even if you can spot experiments done with aggressive basslines, such as in “Thousand Times” and “Lovers On The Sun”. It’s fascinating how 22DEADROSES picked up one of the smoother genres and crafted a brisk schematic, sort of like pumped-up Meduza style.

Following steps were addition of stronger elements, and that’s what happened in “Butterflies”. The song begins slowly, with the recognizable soothing vocals and minimalistic approach. Then, after a brief build-up, suddenly the mentioned kick starts blasting; you have to check this to know how shockingly it stands out from the rest. The lead inclines towards hardstyle, but rather weaker compared to what we are used to hearing usually: it could easily be put in a progressive track and we would be none the wiser.

If you swap out the brutal drum with something softer, “Butterflies” would become your run-of-the-mill deep house song. However, 22DEADROSES decided to take the risk and bring a newer idea to the table. And it works, surprisingly! I am grateful for this release, yet another example of the insane capacity sometimes an unfamiliar but talented name can bring to a genre.
