David Guetta & MORTEN ft. John Martin – Impossible

June 6, 20214 min read

• First single of Future Rave of this summer of 2021
• New movement of genre of these dance music
• Unexpected vocal from John Martin

Four months have passed since I wrote my previous review, and couldn’t be any happier to come back and discuss a hot new single. “Impossible”, composed by the newly formed duo Future Rave, consists of the heavyweights David Guetta and MORTEN. They have been the leading proponents of this new brand of festival music since the last couple of years, impressing me thoroughly in the course to pen articles last year about “New Rave EP” and “Let’s Love” VIP remix, that came out in the later half of 2020.

This weekend, their first single comes out under their recently made singular alias, and was premiered by the French veteran at Tomorrowland virtual festival held last December. Back then it was nominated as “Air”, which later would get more rotations at both Dubai and Miami respectively by both creators. Another significant deal-maker in this record was involvement of another renowned face in EDM, John Martin. He has worked with some of the greatest, namely Swedish House Mafia, Martin Garrix , Felix Jaehn and more. To aid in the production aspects, Danish producers Toby Green and Mike Hawkins have come back to assist as co-producers. This adds to the combination in which the underground sound is amalgamating with mainstream Electro House, making this particular work as interesting as its predecessors.

During the time of writing this, the full version I used for reference is from the gigs it got played at, hopefully it won’t have any major variations from the ID prototype. Moving on, the song strongly leans towards both Electro and Big Room (maybe more towards the latter), reminding me of “Astro” or “Work It” by Toby Green. The riff comes off as the main highlight, having an “in your face” attribute coupled with playful glitch embedded at its tail. Tonally enhanced kicks seize the stage as well, taking care of the low-end in surplus. The breakdown in the other hand, has the charming presence of the said Swedish vocalist, as he intensifies an euphoric tone accompanied with an underlying Reece bass. It functions with pretty much a linear structure unlike the “Let’s Love” VIP remix, which had longer drop segments akin to Techno like arrangements. All in all, this is intended to please the growing admirers of this specific style, sticking to the usual formula that oversaw its success.

My only gripe with “Impossible” would stem from the issue of its late release (postponed an entire week). Other than that, this marks a great opening for the pair, and with the festival and live performance temperament coming back at a steady rate, Future Rave is once again looking at a brighter potential than ever.
