Jake & Alvar – Pass Me By

April 5, 20213 min read

• Future House meets Future Bass
• Predictable yet effective sound-selection
• Helping a great cause in the process (read below)

I rarely happen to feature releases older than two weeks, so that our content is more up-to-date, but today I am satisfyingly making yet another exception.

“Pass Me By” from Jake & Alvar comes as this interesting Future House record that heavily leans on the Future Bass influences (à la Zonderling, for example). Honestly, these team-ups work well and thus I am curious to hear further developments from them. In fact, the label publishing the said track decided to host a remix contest for the month of April, and all the revenues so collected in the due process will go to the Tim Bergling foundation, an institution focusing on mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

Setting aside the different version for a second, let’s actually get to know about “Pass Me By”. It has its tender moments, especially because of its emotional vocal (sending a beautiful message to the listener) and the wobbling bassline in the drop.. having an aggressive flair not usual to the genre’s standards, but this particular lead comes at a cost of being predictable (as it’s overused). But it doesn’t defer from being an effective companion, adding elegance and dynamism at the same time. The melody slowly melts and fuses pleasantly with the mentioned design, assisting the other elements for the entire duration, only varying speeds during the break-drop performances.

If there was an peaking issue with “Pass Me By”, I would admit that something crucial is absent in the schematic that would help it stand out instead. The duo did their diligence and the drop is quite vibrant yes, but the latent potential of how other artists will twist the arrangements to their advantage remains higher. Perhaps that would act as the missing piece.

So, we have an excellent material having capacity to be turned into further intriguing remixes, all for a noble cause at that. The winner’s submission will be reviewed here by us, as we can’t wait to see all the ideas that come up. If interested, do visit @swervecollective to read the details of this contest.
