Being honest, most of the times I tend to review songs from artists of my own country or nearby ones, so for this article I tried to set my sights on the eastern lands of Asia, pretty far away from where I live. If the Asian scene was already famous for its worthy gigs for DJs, many relevant producers from that continent have emerged recently, consolidating itself as a major competitor against the traditional Dutch dinasty. With this in mind, let me introduce you to “Break Away“, the latest creation by Singapore’s Sixth Sense along with the Indian Dominix.
Listening to the first few bars of “Break Away”, we can easily notice that, unlike the vast majority of progressive house tunes, the weight of the break is going to be carried by a vocoded vocal loop. Even at the risk of being monotonous, I appreciate this idea, it adds a subtle touch of originality to the overall concept. Apart from that, the structure follows faithfully the standards of the genre, there’s nothing much more to add.
I would consider the drop as a bit calmer and more relaxed than I expected, but the result is enjoyable. The leads are wide and airy, while a strong bass holds the foundations of this section together with a centred kick, creating a nice conglomerate of sounds that merge marvellously between them. Talking about the melody, it’s definitely catchy, I found myself humming it for the next hour after having listened to it!
In a scene full of upcoming progressive house producers with an identical sound and very few solid ideas, I’m glad to see that some artists are still loyal to their signature style instead of being tempted to make something more “label-friendly”. Subjective opinions aside, “Break Away” is rightly a great piece of work with a lot of personality!
