Codex – Feel The Sun (feat. Julia Rose)

March 22, 20212 min read

• Progressive House with robust features
• Lighthearted breakdown, energetic drop
• Well complementing vocal presence

Progressive House remains as a preferred genre for me, even if it has been struck with mundane schematics, as more producers are opting for copy-pasted, predictive structures that doesn’t dare experiment (say, having a pinch of aggressiveness).

Clubs are closed” can be thrown as this perfectly explained excuse for declining popularity of Festival music in current times. Who cares? I do. I feel drowsy while listening to many artists of this once flourishing genre (got it, Thomas Silver?).

Fortunately to rescue this degradation, there are upcoming aliases who are going the extra mile for adding dynamism to their productions. One such example is Codex, as their noteworthy collaboration with vocalist Julia Rose titled “Feel The Sun” (out on Outrave Recordings) features just the catchy vocal and the delightful summery temperament. In addition to this blueprints, surprise surprise, we have a Big Room-ish attitude in the bassline, granting the requisite amount of stamina I was talking previously in the introduction.

Whether one may debate on whether this is melodic Big Room or not (I admit genre-labelling hasn’t been any easier), but the alluring breakdown with a clearly Progressive House arrangements (similar to the delicate Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman signature), may convince a doubtful listener.

Venturing into the drop, as I said, the robust form of low-end goes hand in hand with snares typical in this style along with a frenetic melodic hook. This short section is bouncy and entertaining, nicely contrasting the softer segment preceding it, thus delivering a great experience.

While “Feel The Sun” isn’t particularly standing out from the mass in terms of its concept, the Swedish duo did make sure to craft with the correct ingredients, ranging from a groovy drop, catchy melody and a heartfelt vocal presence. This is a joyful instrumental for the upcoming season, ready for the dance-floors.
