BlackCode & Carlo Ratto – Keep Us Down (feat. Alessa)

January 19, 20192 min read

• Gorgeous and particular melody
• Appreciable vocal, accompanied by a clever breakdown
• A mix of elegance and catchy vibes

My country often presents arguable figures in the EDM scenes, but, at the same time, there are emerging underrated talents that make me proud as an Italian. The latest example is Blackcode, a name that Revealed fans may already know.

His tracks have been already released three time on Hardwell’s sub-label. The second release, “With You“, shows another interesting Italian name that we find in “Keep Us Down”, Carlo Ratto. The duo has evidently shown serious skills in the noble genre of progressive house, even if it lacks creativity with the choice of the titles. I found “With You” and “Keep Us Down” extremely generic words, even if they are chose based on the vocal lyrics.

Anyway, I should come to the point. Why did I pick “Keep Us Down” for a review? Because of the melody. I pay a lot of attention to melodies nowadays, always looking for something special and unexpected… and this one is a delicious surprise. It slightly reminds me of Wasback’s style, another Italian prodigy of the genre, because of the endeavoring dynamism balanced by a happy and emotional vibe. It’s catchy, but doesn’t exaggerate with complex mechanics or variations. Carlo Ratto and Blackcode didn’t risk too much with this structure, and it’s fine. A rather aggressive bassline accompanies the drop sections.

The vocal, sung by Alessa, does its job proficiently. A guitar, added in the background during some parts of the breakdown, adds that touch of elegance that kept me hooked. It’s a breakdown composed of silences, elegant chords and that passion that I always want to find in music.

In conclusion, “Keep Us Down” may have a generic title, but it’s a rare progressive gem. The two Italian artists didn’t exceed with experimentations, this is a future step to take, but delivered a song that many Revealed fans will like. Congratulations!
