ASCO – Fuga

May 16, 20192 min read

• Fabulous orchestral intro
• Psytrance drop fitting unexpectedly well with the rest
• Italian track of the year?

I’m Italian, and by and far I have been ashamed to see what my co-nationals contribute to the EDM scene. Bots, scandals, copied tracks, scammers (I see you, GLDN), VINAI… But my country also has some underrated talents, like ASCO. Listen here; this genius has put together psytrance and orchestral music. All past and present come together!

I have been keeping my eye on this guy, even though most of his music isn’t my cup of tea (Doorn style tracks, rarely reviewed here), for that one chance that he might drop something unusually magnificent. Today, owing to “Fuga”, I can proudly say my efforts haven’t been in vain! Psytrance-influence over a cinematic structure that pays due respect to Traditional Italian excellence. That’s one of the best ideas I’ve seen in a while.

From what I know a “Fuga”, which is “fugue” in English, is a compositional technique with two or more voices. “Fuga”, plainly enough, begins with an orchestral section composed of two voices, introducing itself elegantly. Then, a sudden Electro house drop begins to play, and that’s where I was impressed.

Steel drums create an energetic background, which is abundantly interspersed by a set of ethereal voices, against the backdrop lies a Psy-bassline which adds that lovely groove. The tune is a blend of Electro house and Psytrance, coupled with an orchestral vocal which, trust me, is unique. The only similar track I have found through the years of EDM is “Opera” by Kaaze, and it still doesn’t remotely justify the quality of Asco’s creation. Also, I think that the psytrance vibe fits perfectly here.

Italy has a long history of musicians, and ASCO paid them a powerful tribute without the Tarantella melody cliché. The idea is refreshing, with a pinch of unpredictability owing to the psytrance in the drop. For once, I’m proud of my country.
