John Christian – Look Amme Go

October 30, 20202 min read

• Funky vibes, Hysteria’s classic style
• Speed House segments, snappy
• Creative trap vibes

After experimenting with his alter-ego JeeCee, the leading Dutch figure John Christian is here again! I somehow happened to miss his earlier release “Dos” a few months earlier, but it is rejoicing to see him back on Hysteria. His funky trademarks have always appeased my ears, catchy and enjoyable without doubt. His latest production “Look Amme Go” extrapolates on his iconic style which captivated me in the first place (having resonant features of tracks like “I Like It Loud” and “The Trip” which played a significant role in his discography).

The structure is simplistic and rejects any unnecessary ostentation: dirty hi-hats, classic bass synths and a swanky vocal presence. A perfect recipe for a danceable tune, as these elements are synchronized to avoid being mundane. The bassline is gritty and driving to add a techno sensation, a plus point.

Moving forward to the drop, it draws a parallel with earlier Bass House arrangements popularised by heavyweights such as Jauz or Habstrakt, and despite it has an endearing track record, it can become monotonous. For some reasons, the instrumental leans ever so slightly towards the Future House tonality, making it more enjoyable and offering an experimental attitude.

My anticipation that the first segment would rehearse again is proved wrong, as a fantastic trap composition appears with a rather rude but alluring vocal. However, the second and climatic portion remains the same, and in all candour, it did not render my experience stale or wanting for further variations.

This single has flown somewhat under the radar and most probably unheard by anxious listeners searching for tunes. Then I can totally recommend “Look Amme Go”, as the Dutch icon has demonstrated his production skills on this splendid club-wrecker!
