Luke Madness, Blaze U, MEYSTA – I Took A Pill In Ibiza

March 24, 20212 min read

• Yep, another generic Slap House rework.
• The same structure as usual: usual kicks, bassline…
• Leo’s vocal performance is quite appreciable

A constant respect for Future House Cloud has always stuck with me, as their releases are often from creative and upcoming names. Yet in all that, their sub-label has vehemently continued to focus on Slap House, creating this bottomless void of generic material being pushed out. Seeb’s iconic spin on Mike Posner’s pop hit “I Took A Pill in Ibiza has forever imprinted itself in the mind of many listeners, especially being a huge influence for me since 2015. My twelve year old self would be disappointed to see what EDM has transformed into, an well-suited example being this mindless rework by Luke Madness, Blaze U and MEYSTA.

While I had decided to review something more worthwhile, this remix came into public existence and finally into my awareness. Same rattling machine-gun like low-end from the first moment, glued together with a overused build-up section and then the drop portion again to maintain a short duration.

So let’s see what the checklist says. Cover of a famous pop song? Sure. Spotify-friendly minus the quality? Mmh, absolutely. Leaving their signature style to jump on this bandwagon? Totally.

Among the cascading amount of shortcomings, Leo’s vocal is actually precise and captures the same spirit of the original work. Yet this pro is far outweighed by the cons, a shame as a proper modern rework from this otherwise talented creators would have done a far better job. There are creative Slap House releases (such as the Sevenn & Moonshine collaboration we talked about), and hopefully I hope to stumble on one sooner than expected.
