Gaspar, D&M – Ominous

June 5, 20202 min read

• Darker tones tinged in discomfiture
• Shape-shifting design, a risky yet unique choice
• Commencement that underlines the label’s focus on creativity

I’m carefully avoiding giving any favoritisms to Intensity Recordings, since I know the owners and the story behind it, thus the requisite of this giant disclaimer in this review: this is not 100% impartial. It’s just my personal experience with the very first release of Intensity, a Tranceroom creation by Gaspar and D&M named “Ominous”. I’ll make sure to keep our articles impartial and transparent in point of view for the future releases.

Now back to the subject. Well-chosen title to begin with, since the centre of strength for the production is its eerie atmosphere, capable of catching the attention in a few seconds. “Ominous” constantly alters attitude during the drop, mixing Trance and Big Room vibes in a colorful blend of different samples. It tries hard to be different from the standard’s clichès, and the result works… Even if I struggled a bit with the melody, as I found it dispersive during some segments.

I think that “Ominous” gives its best during the breakdown, where the trio built a fabulous sequence! It managed to elevate the climax level to insane amounts, and, at the same time, give the already-mentioned “ominous vibe”. Energetic blueprints, using Big Room tools and slowly increasing the rhythm until coming to the final drop, which reuses the known shape-shifting formula as before.

“Ominous” may not be clean or polished, and it’s aware about it. It wants to be different and obscure, and to make the listener uncomfortable by breaking the rules, but at the same time, delivering an entertaining experience thanks to its dynamism. I really liked its atmosphere and its tonality, in conclusion. It’s something “out of the box”, and, in my opinion, a great way for Intensity to show that they are trying to have a distinctive identity, starting right from INR001.
