Controversial Case in Barong Family!

June 4, 20201 min read

If you indulge in Trap or harder dance music, you must have heard of the Barong Family. The label, founded by Yellow Claw, is one of the powerhouses of trap music and a platform for newcomer artists. They released the seventh volume of their collection called “Family Matters” and there was (the past tense is there because of the fact they took it offline from all streaming platforms) a track called “Better Days” made by the mystical figure So Dope. But to much surprise, Fans heard some uncanny resemblances in it with “El Dorado”, a song that will be featured on Skrillex’s oncoming album!

Events cascaded quickly after this at the Barong Family Headquarter, who promptly went on to delete it and apologise for “getting duped” by So Dope on his début release.

Later, So Dope published a post apologizing about the plagiarism, terming that “it was never intentional” and “it was over a year in the making”, however providing no further irrefutable proofs.

One can wonder whether the A&R listened the song carefully, or was it a genuine mistake at best. But they cannot be blamed entirely, since major labels receive thousands of demos everyday.
