Nowadays it seems that the divide between mainstream and the underground EDM scene is becoming more stark than ever. On the one hand, you have labels like Spinnin’ and Strange Fruits who are pumping tracks directly into Spotify playlists for workout or car and making bank while paying little attention to artist development or telling any narrative. Conversely, you have underground labels like Loca Recordings, Glow Records, and Nik Cooper who are doing their best to support rising talents and giving them a platform to share their festival tracks. And right there in the middle you have Revealed trying to play both sides of the court, but that’s an article for another time.
Today we’re going to go over one of Loca’s more high profile releases in 2020. After adding new names to the roster such as Vito Mendez, Giftback, MountBlaq, Winning Team, and AXMO, Loca has tapped into the talent of Debris and his unique blend of future house and big room – otherwise known as future room.
This song is purely about the melody, free of any catchy vocal looks and relies solely on the strength of Debris’ signature leads and melodic style. While the lack of vocals makes the first thirty seconds feel a bit empty leading to the buildup, when the drop hits, the wave of nostalgia back to tracks like “Valkyrie” and his remix for “Never Know”.
The question is now if there’s really a spot for music like this in 2020 or have so many people moved on to tech house, bass house, and the rest of the easily-consumable genres? For us, the answer is yes: releasing songs like “Ace” shows other producers that make tracks with similar energy levels that there is still a market for this style. Festival music has always enjoyed some of the most vocal fans (for better or worse) which we believe will propel this style back to prominence throughout the rest of 2020 and beyond.
