Tiësto & Becky Hill – Nothing Really Matters

April 25, 20203 min read

• Successful hit with house vibes, following the current trendy sound
• Unnecessary presence of Tiesto, since it’s “co-produced” by Gorgon City
• Stunning vocal performance by the reputed Becky Hills

This review is arriving slightly late, as I’ve thought a lot about whether to write it or not… I usually avoid to let negative thoughts flow into my reviews, unless I have a particular reason to talk about. And there is one. I am tired of Tiesto’s cut-and-dried approach.

Disclaimer: this is just my partial view about one of the gargantuan of EDM, a person that I truly have respect for. His past is nothing short of historic, but in the latest years, I’ve accepted the thought that he has become unnecessary for me, as far as I can conclude from the recent times.

A precise way to explain my concept is by listening to his new song, “Nothing Really Matters”, with Becky Hill. Surely a successful hit, containing a catchy riff, stunning vocal and excelsior quality at a technical level. But that’s it. The tune feels like an unnecessary release for me.

“Nothing Really Matters” bases itself towards the successful Tech-House of Meduza. Ironically, the talented songstress worked with them in “Lose Control”, a song that further set up this new underground trend. From the credits, the “co-producer“‌ (I’m respectfully avoiding to use another word) is Gorgon City (a house duo), thus explaining the unmistakable vibes. It’s simply the work of else who is proficient with this genre, and Tiesto’s name slapped on it. And that’s what triggers me.

At the time of the infamous “Tiesto’s Edits”, there was something positive; Tiesto was using the same strategy also adopted by Guetta: adding minimal changes to a production and “promote” upcoming talented artists. It was wholesome, in a certain sense, helping others stand out. Here, Gorgon City is hidden in the credits, the aim is just to increase the already immense net-worth of the mentioned heavyweight, by cloning a genre style he’s perhaps not even interested in. It’s literally jumping on the bandwagon, without even putting a minimal effort, and I’m tired to see this behavior from the “bigs”, standing lazily on the top of the charts knowing that their huge popolarity from past hits is enough for earning further, unnecessary profits.

Avoiding further comments, I’ll simply say that this does not set a good example for the industry, and must be abated. We don’t need this lazy Tiesto and these releases.
