Vito Mendez & Cloudrider – Break It Down

April 9, 20203 min read

• Dark, aggressive atmosphere
• Big Room structure introducing new sounds
• Unexpected surprises with distinctive samples

It is exciting to see Loca Recordings always supporting new, talented and important names (even if I rarely can keep up with that steadily aggressive release schematic). Like a grizzly catching a fish with his claws in a thunderous river, I finally managed to select one of the many high-quality releases from the expanding catalogue, sat down and wrote about it.

Vito‌ Mendez is a guy that has worked behind the curtains of EDM continuously, and I’m sure you’ve heard his works around. At the moment he has some Big Room releases out in Generation Smash, if you want to explore his sound. Speaking about Cloudrider, he has released intriguing productions in esteemed labels such as 2Dutch and FHC‌ Selection, usually more Future House oriented. The duo teamed up with the veteran Dani L. Mebius, a name I’m reading after years, for the Loca’s new entry “Break It Down”.

Generic title, but I can’t say the same adjective for the outcome!‌ “Break It Down” surprised me with its atmosphere, that strikes an aggressive, dark tonality, that almost left me in an uncomfortable position. The Vito‌ Mendez’s lead is stoutly brutal, fitting well with the eerie vocal loop briefly, used in the breakdown. The overall feeling is that this instrumental perseveres to be “a big bad boy”, immediately showing its energetic, destructive personality without leaving a single sign of static or staleness. In fact, the ambience escalates into a vigorous drop, where I noticed some of Cloudriders touch in the bassline. The schematics, following a shape-shifting melodic pattern, constantly changes in subtle movements, leaving the idea of a dynamic character.

The second breakdown has unexpected moments of happy vibes, where the lead suddenly shakes off of some dirtness… But the final drop reminds us that “Break It Down” is indeed the‌ “big bad boy”.

Overall, I was expecting something like that from these professionals: great job! “Break It Down” unites a high technical quality with a curious attribute, and the result is difficult to forget!
