KSHMR x Hard Lights – Over and Out (feat. Charlott Boss)

February 16, 20202 min read

• Not spooky, but with the familiar bouncy drop’s structure
• Charismatic performance by Charlott Boss
• Complex, hard-hitting melodic schema

Despite our negative impression of Hard Lights’ persona, especially after he resorted to insulting one of our fans when exposed about his use of story-watching Instagram bots, as a producer, I must admit that he’s talented. His brief release catalogue has plenty of gems, including the creative belter “90s Better” with Syzz, the underrated “Another Level” featuring Flaremode, and the grandiose “Fantasia” with Marnik & The Golden Army.

Perhaps with the preceding aforementioned collaboration, the upcoming producer caught the attention of KSHMR, the guy who particularly cares about talent. The result of their joint effort is “Over and Out“, along with the great vocalist Charlott Boss.

“Over and Out” is a particular club number that sources its inspiration from two KSHMR classics, “The Spook” and “The Spook Returns“. The bouncy drop (also reworked by Marnik in tunes like “Up & Down” as well) uses a barrage of notes, differentiating its attitude from usual Bounce music, redacting its orientation towards complex melodies. It’s a structure that endeared by the fans, and, in my opinion, is devastatingly vicious during live performances: it takes the aggressive dynamism of Melbourne Bounce and adds copious amounts of stamina in it, thanks to a fast-pacing melody, while keeping a rather “mass-friendly” behaviour, denying to be brutal or underground. Hardstyle vibes in the final section add a further layer of dynamism.

The atmosphere is “less spooky” compared to its Halloween counterparts, also considering the presence of a sweet vocal by Charlott Boss. The breakdown section, in particular, is full of joyous vibes and adds enough dynamism for the buildup part.

Concluding, “Over and Out” is a well-executed release: bringing back the playfulness of “The Spook”, with KSHMR managing to show one of his most appreciated formulas. That being said, we sincerely hope the Malaysian native will focus more on his craft, without relying on unapproved methods of media promotion.
