• Hardtrap, excellent idea!
• Annoying vocal, very repetitive
• A chance for a new style? Let’s hope so…
Ahh, VINAI…
During the years, the Italian duo has been criticized various times by the EDM community (for a good reason, I must add). After their successful hit “Raveology” with DVVBS, VINAI recycled their bounce project in dozens of productions.
I remember a YouTube video (then copyright claimed by Alessandro Vinai) comparing 15 songs by them… The whole structure, duration included, was always the same. This originated the “copy & paste VINAI” meme we all know.
As expected, this reused sound (even if catchy) couldn’t last forever. VINAI don’t seem very worried about that, but their name isn’t trending anymore. Their last huge release was “Parade” on Spinnin’, two years ago. In the meanwhile, they did a lot of tours, jumped on the future bass bandwagon (sigh), created a label, then abandoned the project (the last release from another artist was in January 2018), tried to work on italodance, and now, they are back with a new style…
I can’t believe I’m saying that but… Good job, VINAI!
“How I Like It” is an hardtrap release that reinvents in a gorgeous way their aggressive style. The brothers are specialized in club bangers and this SAYMYNAME/Tynan stuff proposes a new point of view about their music. The intro is not particularly innovative, just a vocal loop (very repetitive, not appreciated) and a cinematic structure escalating into the drop. That part was more interesting to me instead: it’s hardtrap already heard from other artists, but with that hard-hitting VINAI’s behaviour! I felt that they managed to put their essence while completely changing genre, and that’s a fantastic idea.
Bad timing, though.
Three years ago hardtrap was flourishing, and that could have been the perfect moment for VINAI to reinvent themselves and remain at the top. Instead, we had a commercial future bass phase, again the copy-paste bounce, the deluding label, while time passed…
I would love to assert that there is hope for VINAI’s future with hardtrap, but I declared the same in the “Parade” review. It was a nice style, a sort of more melodic bounce, but after the release, they abandoned it.
What do you think?
