The Chainsmokers & Illenium ft. Lennon Stella – Takeaway

August 1, 20192 min read

• Two different, yet compatible styles
• Both vocals contribute to a fantastic feeling
• Predictable, but enjoyable

The whole EDM scene, including me, was caught by surprise by this unexpected collaboration! The Chainsmokers played it well, releasing their huge collab with the Future Bass maître Illenium, almost without any anticipation. Two days after the announcement, fans got the official video and the release of “Takeaway”, and I truly appreciated it. I didn’t want to wait for this exciting production.

Anyway, let’s see what we have here. Illenium is one of the most beloved artists around, with an impressive number of world hits and a passionate, emotional style, while The Chainsmokers, despite a poppish period considered as a “backstabbing” from part of the scene, are, in my humble opinion, back in the track with the right mix of commercial sounds and dubstep/trap experiments. A spicy combination that doesn’t disappoint.

“Takeaway” shows a solid mix between the two different, yet compatible, auras. A calm (and a bit too minimal for my standards, the guitar structure didn’t shine) breakdown introduces itself with a magnificent duet featuring Lennon Stella, and Andrew Taggart. Then, a classic Illenium drop, with slight influences from the American duo, makes its solemn introduction. In all its simplicity, “Takeaway” delights the listener with an effective, elegant formula. Favourite part? The combination of styles in the drop never fails to get me, damn.

It has been a while since I genuinely appreciated a future bass construction by The Chainsmokers, but here we go: I’m happy about my rating, I think it’s well deserved. The trio didn’t risk with something innovative, the result is somehow really predictable, but the overall quality and the good vibes that I got has balanced my vision of “Takeaway”.

It is not a masterpiece, neither is it the best work by either names, but I can feel the passion behind it, and I had a good time while reviewing it. That is letting the partial uncreativity part of the song out for the moment.
