Sub Zero Project & Timmy Trumpet ft. DV8 – Rockstar

• Where’s Timmy Trumpet?
• Surprising names for Spinnin’
• Gorgeously brutal drop, SZP style

From one side, I’m glad to see Sub Zero Project on Spinnin’… It’s an unbelievable occasion, their kind of brutal hardstyle has never been presented there and I’m curious to see the fans reactions. I guess I must thank Timmy Trumpet, who’s a Spinnin’ artist, for that.

However, his presence doesn’t appear in “Rockstar”, which is 100% dominated by SZP, and it’s a shame because I was hoping to see some kind of balance between such different artists. Horrible performance by the Australian professional, but at least he tried to expand his horizons. It wasn’t easy.

Sub Zero Project, the Dutch Duo, have already delighted hardstyle fans with their brutal and aggressive style, one of the most underground approaches in the community (without considering hardcore, etc…). Their new collab “Rockstar” mainly surprised us for the label, rather than its structure. It presents a vocal by DV8 (overall, a good performance) following an approach already noticed in other releases of the duo, a crazy guitar solo in the break, and the usual explosive drop. I found funny that Sub Zero Project didn’t minimally try to “sound commercial” and smashed this release with a gorgeous drop, using a minimal melody and a darker bassline (slightly psytrance-ish in the second part, maybe the only Timmy Trumpet like element) than usual. It’s almost a euphemism if you know their discography, but they made more melodic tracks than “Rockstar”, that’s what I mean. Nonetheless, this is very appreciated!

The breakdown, after the already described guitar solo, doesn’t really go anywhere but switches into a normal build-up, ruining a good chance of delivering an unforgettable climax. Not a big deal, because SZP love to suddenly break the atmosphere with their drops, so they don’t really need a huge climax.

In conclusion, “Rockstar” is a good release for the Project, despite the missed potential caused by the absence of Timmy Trumpet elements and an unsatisfying part of the breakdown… We hope that Spinnin’ will keep presenting some hardstyle in the future!
