• Intricacies between vocal and melody
• Energetic and pulsating drop
• Tasteless breakdown
A couple of years ago I presented you Max Fail, an excellent and ambitious Future House producer who impressed me… and it’s time for a follow-up! His collaboration with native duo-logy The Cousins (a new name, who have intriguing independent releases) enters the FHC catalog with a bang! “Run Away” may not be the most ingenious effort at title-selection, but the underlying base was enough to amaze me.
I’ll start without beating around the bush. The breakdown part didn’t particularly convince me. Sure, the German triad worked well around a vocal, which is otherwise difficult to manage, but the result is somehow predictable and linear.
I was anticipating for that spark of personality, a tinge of the unusual that would be able to define a unique segment.
Then, the drop sweetened the deal by showing its pleasant atmosphere. The dynamic essence is commendable, further amplified by the “stabbing” effect of the assortment of samples. The resonating “bangs” enhance that wobbling bassline, a definitive and successful strategy applied here! The melodic hook leaves nothing short of an indulgence… A complex structure that fits like a glove with the vocal, and the overall pizzazz injected within its composite architecture. The vocal refrains from being simple, obviously having produced hindrances during creation stages, but surprisingly well-managed by the overall instrumental.
I will guiltily confess in the end: I rarely devote time listening to Future House. However, that won’t make me redact my thoughts about the breakdown, which didn’t click for me. Apart from that, I will say it is a satisfying experience. The Cousins have further achieved with this record, as this is a worth-mentioning début in FHC for them, and for having the chance to represent Max Fail again. Waiting for the next gem!
