Chris Royal & RAITH – Nu Flava

September 9, 20192 min read

• Hypnotic “mumbled” vocal loop
• Unique drop structure, Bass House bedrock with various influences
• Difficult to handle at first but worth the time later!

“Nu Flava” isn’t one of the generic tunes present in abundance, but a complex composition with a great personality and a pinch of mystery. Many elements used by Chris Royal and RAITH positively impressed me!

Released on Will Spark’s imprint Bourne Recordings, “Nu Flava” continually tries to surprise the listener, starting with the extravagant title. The vocal is deep, mumbled, and challenging to follow, a style that immediately invites rivet and critique. If used in a loop, like in this buildup, works tremendously well!

Then the main drop (that I found extremely difficult to categorize) enters into action. There are some psy influences (after all, Bourne is a bounce label!), but we can discover Bass house and Future house facets at various levels. The melody is composite and is continuously interrupted by growls, vocal shots, and stabs, this may be difficult to follow at first, but luckily the vibe sets in pretty quickly.

The sparkling personality of the two artists involved makes this experimentation, composed of quality sounds, thoroughly entertaining. Chris Royal is an expert producer, developing a versatile style which got significant success in a crazy remix of “Let You Down” by Bombs Away. RAITH, as well, is focused on more deep-bass influences, and this explains the mixed vibes in the drop.

“Nu Flava,” concluding, is a fun experiment that needs to be valorized and shared around. It’s a song for the listeners who have an affinity towards a more “underground” approach, but even if you are used to different sounds, like me, I suggest giving it a try. They have potential; I look forward to hearing more of such combinations!
