Still Young & Kosling ft. OMZ – When We Were Young

May 28, 20192 min read

• One of the most solid progressive tracks of the year
• SIZE vibes, plus Kosling’s touch
• Almost Payback 2.0

A couple of weeks ago, I talked about Kosling, an uprising talent who is going strong in the progressive world. I found out that he had a brand new release on SIZE, with Still Young, an experienced veteran of Steve Angello’s label! Ever since the first listen I fell in love with “When We Were Young”, and I can accurately say why: the lead has that legendary vibe from “Payback“! DV&W are two of my favorite artists around, and the familiar feeling suscitated in me a peaceful sensation. Being honest, Still Young has always had a similar approach towards the genre, and in fact, I loved some of his releases, especially the crazy “Check It Out“, where he shows both his groovy and progressive structures.

However, the duo added their personalities to the composition. The melody has that Kosling touch that I’m starting to get used to, it’s more complicated than usual, the notes dance around its structure. Still Young added his experience to the field, characterized by a “SIZE-style” wobbly bassline. That’s the pure progressive quality with a pinch of unexpected flavor in the melody, supported by a delightful vocal by OMZ! The structure is solid, without flaws or defects.

Unfortunately, I think that “When We Were Young” still lacks that uniqueness I was looking for. Someone called it “Payback 2.0” and, even though I think it’s a great compliment being compared to such a legendary tune, “WWWY” is still too akin to it. I’m afraid that this tag won’t go away; there are too many similarities here.

From my point of view, the duo dropped a fantastic song, enjoyable and well produced. However, creativity is a crucial element in my reviews, so I had to lower the final rating. In conclusion, if you like classic Progressive House, you will appreciate the job done by Still Young and Kosling, but I was hoping for something capable of diverting from the traditional boundaries.
