Valentino Khan – Pony

May 17, 20192 min read

• An unusual choice for the protagonist – a Horse!
• Hypnotic bass house composition
• Sagacious use of samples

We announced a few days back that we’d try to introduce a bit of variety in the genres that we’re reviewing on this network. Probably the best way to break the humdrum is through”Pony”, the new release by Valentino Khan on Mad Decent.

Though initially sceptic about this submission, owing to my lack of expertise and general view towards this approach to Bass House, (for instance I disliked Valentino’s noteworthy “Deep Down Low“), Valentino Khan managed to astonish and enthral me with “Pony”. I wasn’t confident about my perspective towards it, but the more I ponder over it as I write this review, the more I’m convinced that the track is skilfully fabricated.

The distinctive peculiarity of “Pony” is – The choice of samples to be used. I’m uncertain about the source of the samples, so I have an inkling that Valentino Khan created them himself. They are unique, starting from the unusual whisper to the gallop sound: figuratively speaking, “Pony” represents the different sounds associated with a horse running around, with a structure that symbolizes the rhythmic activity, the whispers of the wind and even the loose soil. Another essential attribute of this song is its non-linearity: There are variations of the bassline, with new elements introduced, taken away & reintroduced. “Pony” is a sequence of little but continuous surprises and being a person that gets easily stultified by monotone, this track is a real blessing.

It’s not repetitive; it has an exclusive yet straightforward concept; it manages to entertain without presenting too many elements altogether. “Pony” is an intelligent creation. I didn’t have high expectations, but I was convinced to assign an excellent rating to it, I’m sure that many of you guys will enjoy Valentino Khan’s latest work.
