Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman – Penny

• Brimming with emotions
• Creative arrangements
• Impactful melody and rhythm

It is an established truth that some things simply don’t need an appraisal, but rather to be cherished and appreciated for its magnificence. Saying this, I should neither rate nor evaluate this song, as we did in the occasion which involved Illenium’s creation referring to depression and stress. The rating is for the motive of the song itself, not what’s behind it. “Penny” brims with emotion and sentiment, however, there is more to discover with this particular composition.

Talking about the backstory behind this instrumental, it centres around Penny, a little girl, who is an unfortunate victim to Fibular Hemimelia. Her family (whom you can follow at @angelicalundin_ on Instagram), are trying their best to raise awareness about this rare illness. DV&W took the opportunity and decided to contribute in a creative and alluring way: by crafting a solid Progressive House production.

The drop stunned me when I heard it for the very first time : it has that classic signature influence by the Swedish duo, with a dash of unique personality. It has that genuine, joyful tone with a modicum of positive naivety. This made me feel like Penny herself was speaking through the song, sharing her courage through the notes. The song has a distinctive sweet tone that gives it a rather “childlike” impression, filled with vibrancy and fervour.

While the aforementioned segment swirls with sonorous and intense synths, the breakdown works with a different and interesting arrangement. Elegant in its own way, various elements like the guitar, or the upbeat cadence in the breakdown deliver a refreshing pause before the second ecstatic drop.

We have to admit that Progressive House is a genre where experimentation requires intellect. Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman did it with flair, all the while creating an impactful and memorable record for a noble cause.
