64/100
• Simple drop structure that left us unsatisfied
• Funky break with a catchy vocal
• Creative approach, but not convincing
“EDM Bubble” left us slightly sceptical. For Spinnin’ standards, this collaboration between the Dutch Jay Hardway and Mike Cervello is intriguing and original… But sometimes originality isn’t enough.
We were pleasantly surprised to see those names together. Jay Hardway has always been quite versatile, but at the moment is focused in chilly progressive house, while Mike Cervello, a Barong veteran, prefers a way more aggressive approach. Both of them are particularly unpredictable, so it’s nice to see their artist skills near each other!
However, the result, “EDM Bubble”, has been overestimated by us reviewers. Its minimalistic drop left us with the unsatisfying aftertaste of “yeah nice, but it could be better”.
The drop, as said, it’s minimal. Jay Hardway’s influence is present in some fills and in the lead (similar to the one used in “El Mariachi“), but Mike Cervello added his touch with a massive bassline. It could be a really energetic idea, but the melody simply doesn’t get stuck in our heads. We found it static, not able to show the creative skills of Hardway and Cervello. That section is missing something.
Then, a funky breakdown adds some elegance but slightly lacks in personality as a counterbalance.
“EDM Bubble” has a creative idea behind it. It’s like a house with a solid basement. However, the roof is not completely protecting it from the rain (which symbolizes our critics). We would have loved more surprises in the drop, to add dynamism, and more personality in the breakdown.
In conclusion, this is an acceptable release, but with a bitter aftertaste for the missed chance of having a really interesting hit.
