78/100

• Catchy guitar, stunning drums
• Curiously and mysterious tribal vocal
• The first release of Maha Vana

Wiwek… I remember calling his music “a chaotic mess” (not in a review, on my own) when I began discovering jungle terror. So many things have changed.

The Dutch producer basically brought to the mainstream scene the jungle terror genre. It’s a genre I rarely listen to, but I must admit that back in time, it was a miracle, being such a particular and unusual kind of EDM.

In conclusion, I always found Wiwek as a fascinating artist, courageous and revolutionary. During the years he established his dominance in the scene with many hits, and now he’s ready for a new chapter. “Black Panther”, in collaboration with Kuenta | Tambu, is in fact the first release of his label, Maha Vana.

As Wiwek declared, this is inspired by the Marvel movie, and the two artists tried to replicate the talking drum instrument.

Coming to the instrumental, the opulent amount of offbeat and experimental groove enhances the rhythm without losing energy. Taking hints from the native African music style, both of the artists involved utilized funky percussion and swirling elements which together form a dynamic backdrop. Furthermore, guitar licks get added in the equation for even more catchiness, working along the other components harmoniously. The breakdown sweeps in with tribal vocal snippets, which fits aptly with the groove. Another swanky male vocal joins the league, embedding liveliness to the pattern. Without further delay, the drop takes over with snazzy-ness.

Getting creative, resonating drums strike to a peculiar yet fresh melody, changing the pitch alternately for variations. Even with the simplicity, this segment of the production managed to hook us to the beat, without being too repetitive or something like that. Both the genial portions of the track efficiently present an enjoyable play of instruments, without doubts!

Wiwek always manages to create interesting music. “Black Panther” is an example of the previous declaration. It’s a good starting point for Maha Vana, we are curious to see what will happen in the future!
