Not Your Dope – Broken Child (ft. JDAM & LissA)

June 22, 20182 min read

82/100

• Magnetic drop, with elegance and personality
• The two vocals do their jobs in a stunning way
• Unusual chilly release for Not Your Dope, but definitely a nice discovery!

With a terrible delay, today we finally present a gem by Not Your Dope, JDAM, and Lissa. “Broken Child” fascinated us, so, even though it’s 20 days old, we felt the need to present this release to you.

Usually, we don’t review chill trap. Usually, we don’t review songs older than a week (apart from Vintage ones). This fact will give you a hint about the quality of “Broken Child”. We left Not Your Dope with a “Dope” flip of “The Island (Skrillex Remix)” last month, and the German talent is ready to surprise again.

The main particular (unfairly criticized) is the Kontakt Exhale patch in the drop. The sample is the same as of “Mi Gente” but, instead of complaining about this coincidence, we are in love with it! As the reggaeton hit demonstrated, this sample is incredibly catchy, and Not Your Dope reused it in an EDM context. The drop, in fact, presents the characteristic loop, a bouncy bassline, and a delicate elegance that fits with the melancholic mood of the tune.

Sure, catchy and summer vibes, but the overall message is deeper and sad. The two awesome singers switch their roles various times, balancing the two great voices in a hypnotic sequence.

The drop, as said, hypnotized us. It’s very easy to listen to it on repeat (and Spotify can confirm that we did so). Lightweight, extremely catchy, sweet and classy.

Not Your Dope is not really into chill vibes, but “Broken Child” is a gorgeous production. Catchy. Creative. A revenge (for us) against our “enemy” reggaeton, because we consider this sample truly valorized in this way. Congrats.
