Madison Mars – Back The Funk

May 14, 20182 min read

77/100

Many of you know Madison Mars for his happy future house style, definitely established thanks to his wonderful releases on Hexagon, Don Diablo’s label. However, the Estonian talent evidently has more weapons in his arsenal. We talked about them in a previous review, “Rock Right Now“: even if we are talking about poppish style like “All They Wanna Be” or underground electro house, his style shines and amazes the listener.

The underground style of his previous collab with Firebeatz is back on this groovy release on Musical Freedom. “Back The Funk” brings up the bass house influences we noticed and emphasizes them in an extreme way. The result is another great release, unpredictable and catchy! MF definitely hits the target in this case: Tiesto’s label often presents bass house, and “Back The Funk” respects this guideline. Sure, the label most of the times brings different genres, but we felt that this song is more suitable here than on Hexagon.

Anyway, let’s stop gibberish and let’s focus on this beautiful piece of EDM. “Back The Funk” evidently brings back the funky bass house mood to the mainstream scene. A deep and loud vocal creates a hypnotic mood, broken by the massive bassline of the drop. That bassline is simply majestic, capable to charge us up and infuse a huge amount of adrenaline in the cold hearts of us reviewers.
We weren’t expecting such an aggressive approach by Madison Mars, but this is a nice surprise! Our experience has been satisfying.

There are some similarities with the famous “Deep Down Low” by Valentino Khan (especially in the vocal), but Madison Mars added a dynamism and a brutal aggressiveness that made us fall in love with the release!

Bass house is a genre we rarely present, but “Back The Funk” is impossible to miss… For both bass house experts and fans that want to discover this underrated genre. Musical Freedom dropped another great release this time!
