W&W, “Million Places” is bland: Happy Hardcore with the usual vocals, the usual melody, the usual lead… with R3HAB instead of AXMO

• Bad? No, just… Generic
• The usual recipe
• No traces of R3HAB

It is distressing to give such a low score to W&W, who are doing great endeavors in the Happy Hardcore scene and running their label excellently, but I am tired of these releases always following the same formula. “Million Places” comes off as a sluggish downgrade not only because of our beloved R3HAB but also because it is there right from the first second.

In the past months, W&W released several tunes in this genre often with AXMO (great guys) or Harris & Ford, such as “Rave Superstar“, “Ritmo De La Noche“,”Heaven Is A Place On Earth“,”Come With Me” and so on. Each one of them carries a distinct personality, great melodies, and appreciable additions (often thanks to the collaborators), but rinse and repeat doesn’t work its charm every time. “Million Places” confirmed that enough is enough.

Predictable, with the usually higher-pitched vocal, the typical W&W lead, and a very generic drop. No signs of a Big Room or Hardstyle twist in sight, just straight plain HH. Maybe I am used to more experimental takes, but “Million Places” just left me empty and tired: it is like a W&W release stripped out of what makes it interesting. We have a nice piano in the breakdown, a part I appreciated as it made for a calmer ambiance before returning with the same lead. I forgot about this collaboration mere minutes after listening.

So, I won’t say that Happy Hardcore is not the right decision here, the Dutch pair have clearly revived this genre in a creative sense. Nevertheless, tt still requires some inventive efforts to keep things savory.

And R3HAB? Nowhere to be seen.
