Unreal Acquisition

March 6, 20221 min read

If somebody had asked if the words “Bandcamp” and “Fortnite” together meant anything last Monday, it would be quickly dismissed with a joke or two. That was to change on the 3rd of this month, as both the said music streamer and multimedia company announced their merger together on social platforms.

Epic Games, valued at a staggering 20 billion USD, are mainly known as the developers of the notorious Fortnite and their more sophisticated Unreal engine, which pretty much powers the majority of video games of these days. Bandcamp, on the other hand, became synonymous with various musicians since the pandemic for being an indie artist-centric platform, providing for higher than usual payout rates and even wavering their remittance entirely on some Fridays.

The American corporate giant took over Bandcamp for an undisclosed amount, to which the latter’s CEO Ethan Diamond stated, “Bandcamp will keep operating as a standalone marketplace and music community… Epic ticks all those boxes.
