It was merely by 2013, as I remember, a particularly buzzing Electro House song was being rotated everywhere on the electronic music festival circuits. Its creator, a fresh-faced and zealous twenty-four-year-old Dutch DJ/Producer, was receiving astronomical success (though he wasn’t a stranger to any of that, thanks to massive records like “Zero 76”). In the coming years, however, “Spaceman” would carve itself as one of the most recognizable EDM hits from the 2010s.
Being 22nd release of the Revealed Recordings, and successor to the fairly appreciated “Cobra”, the true genius of the said instrumental was perhaps in its ingenuity of sound-selection; not relying on cheeky low-end tonal kick-drums, but it was the excess of detuned Electro synths combining with a Trance-y hook in the breakdown (something the Breda based veteran has freely applied on his earlier progressive trademark) that gave an experience best suited on larger speakers.
There have been several re-takes done on the classic gem, notably the Headhunterz version that came right after, and the most recent being the pumping Hardstyle edit from Dr. Phunk on the “Revealed Tenth Anniversary Remixed” compilation. Yet, one can only imagine if the now-on-hiatus star gave a modern re-touch on his all-time magnum opus: what would be his artistic style of approach?
It’s remarkable how much “Spaceman” influenced the EDM domain, a sounding reminder to gargantuan events that shook and trembled by electrified crowds every time it played. Even though it has aged from a technical standpoint on its audio-engineering limitations at the time, Hardwell’s singular efforts into this inducted many listeners into the genre and molded them into beloved fans.
