WHAT IF? – Kygo & Curbi – Don’t Sleep

May 10, 20193 min read

There is always a perpetual excitement in the industry of electronic music, which can be attributed to the reason for unusual and unexpected collaborations. However, not all of our wishful team-ups come to life. For that very reason, we are going to open yet another “What If?”, this time going for a fictitious joint-effort between Kygo, the heavyweight act from Norway and the young British prodigy Curbi. Yes, we know it sounds outlandish from the very first mention. But, assuming their signatures are compatible with each other, the end-product will be appealing. Before we continue any further, we would like to christen this supposed synergy as “Don’t Sleep”.

If we go briefly over both of the artists’ sounds and their favoured arrangements, the contrary nature at first glance is overwhelming. While the leading Norwegian solo has registered his name in both the pop and EDM scene, the English DJ/Producer has been known for his creative and vigorous Festival-ready compositions. Kygo, whose breakthrough single “Firestone” went viral and heavily appreciated, has been dominant with his music since then. Known for utilizing hooking and dreamy melodic tones, he has pioneered in the Tropical-House genre over time.

Meanwhile, Curbi may be an up and coming talent, yet he has proved his significance with his dexterous productions. At the mere age of sixteen, he debuted at Spinnin’ Records, which is no easy feat to attain. He further garnered attention from various preeminent artists like Tiesto. His further ingenious works like “Triple Six” made it to the esteemed Musical Freedom as well. Just over the span of four years, he has already played in top-notch festivals/clubs and revealed even more potential with every release.

Don't Sleep

Now talking about our faux single, how will it work? Or how will it sound like? Here we won’t digress to technicalities of audio-production, but rather stick to simplicity. Just like any layman would muse about it. Obviously, like any other song, there will be a breakdown and a drop segment. Now, the breakdown will have a sweet and alluring tone, to capture the listener’s concentration. Using chiming and plucky synths, it will emanate rather hypnotic vibes. But what comes next will be served as the powerhouse. The following portion of the drop will see an abrupt increase in BPM, with a distorted bassline, thudding kick and playful synth-riffs. If the preceding section offers a luscious and enticing flavour, the drop will elevate the experience to a more vigorous and robust one!

That sums up our description for “Don’t Sleep”, and even if the possibilities are less, we do keep hope that this collaboration somehow happens in near future.

How would you imagine “Don’t Sleep”? Let us know!
