It seems fitting to visit the past for the first throwback for this fall, and there could be none better than a relatively underrated tune to feature here, at least in my opinion. “Pretty Green Eyes”, a hit from the early 2000s, was conceived by the British dance project Ultrabeat. Although lesser known, it further solidified reputation of its creators.
Before we even begin, there’s more past to this song than it meets the eye (no pun intended). Originally produced before this millennium’s dawn by Force & Styles (now Darren Styles!) in ‘96, Ultrabeat remixed the song after seven years, giving it a much-needed Handsup/Eurodance spin. Back then, the Liverpudlian group worked in the same studio where a younger Mike Di Scala was also present as an engineer (who assisted with the production work and vocals), fifteen years prior to getting grammy-nominated as one half of today’s widely known Electronic pair, CamelPhat.
The track is a time-capsule of sorts, describing veritably the razzmatazz and zing that came packed with most commercial Dance music back then. Hoovering super-saws on top of boisterous kickdrums dominates the production, with the Trance-y melodic rhythms uplifting the seductive vocals. Dashing at an 140 BPM, this was a hypnotic belter meant for the afterhours raves, albeit finding success later at radios; charting at number 2 and 4 respectively in UK, and under top hundred throughout the span of Europe.
Even if nearly two decades old, “Pretty Green Eyes” best captures the feel good and upbeat sounds from its year of making, setting its own legacy and prospering as a classic tune to remember.
