One of the things that attract criticism the most in the EDM scene is sheer and unsought hypocrisy. Showtek have demanded our reprimand with one of the most whopping insults to their fan-base, and to everybody’s rationality with their brand new predicament “EDM Sucks”.
Sorry, Gammer, we truly respect you and your work, this article isn’t about you. As part of their upcoming EP, the Dutch duo has decided to “renege” and “get back to their roots“, with the first release being a brutal, harsh attack against the classic EDM clichés. In this case, Showtek are attacking the mundane, cheesy vocal and the predictable drops that “every DJ wants to play”, only then to introduce a Dubstep influenced structure, strong chances of which being influenced by Gammer’s schematics.
Usually, we tend to appeal and commend these “out of the box things” ingenuities, but dear Showtek…
Your whole career since 2012 has been based on milking your “Booyah” style without second thoughts or originality, even if the “goose” stopped laying golden eggs a long time back.
You got hundreds of millions of streams, more dough than I’ll ever see in my life, following these “triviality” you are berating in your latest release.
EDM may “sucks”, but only when it’s not tallying up to your fiscal profits and revenues.
We closed an eye when Showtek crossed over from Hardstyle to EDM, the early results were gorgeous (do you remember the collaborations with Hardwell and Tiesto?)… But in “EDM Sucks”, there is that artificial “F*ck The System” attitude that I can’t ignore. You can’t behave like “rebels” when your latest release, for example, just three months ago, featured the cheesy vocals and predictable poppish drops you are criticizing now… And then the usual Spotify revenues-grabbing tactic of releasing multiple, single remixes.
What do you think?
