OUTRAGE & TBR vs. GIANTS – Starting Over

September 13, 20193 min read

• Unexpected melodic approach
• Heavy experimentation with a high-pitched vocal
• “Work In Progress” tune that doesn’t disappoint

5 people behind this song, 5 experienced producers in the genre. Tunisia based OUTRAGE, uprising German native TBR and Croatian duo-logy GIANTS have teamed up again (after “Invincible“, released on Loca Recordings) and deliver another banger! The three names are a well-oiled mechanism of dark progressive/big room, with a similar, distinctive style. They have teamed-up with each other various times before, with various releases on labels like Quartzo, Revealed.dj and Loca.

Having heard their sound for various times, I was hoping for something different with “Starting Over”, considering the title, and I wasn’t disappointed… Despite a couple of “meh” moments.

Compared with their “Tranceroom” (W&W style, with a rather aggressive structure), “Starting Over” develops a format more melody-oriented… And I appreciated it! The complex structure of the melody characterizes this new collaboration, creating an atmosphere where getting entranced is rather easy. A high-pitched vocal is the main element of the breakdown, and, despite the creative take, I found it too dominant for my tastes. It’s everywhere, including the drop! Evidently, the producers heavily experimented with this kind of vocal… A choice that, I must admit, has the potential for the future. The rest of the break presents a classic structure, supporting the abovementioned vocal effectively.

The drop was rather a surprise, because I wasn’t expecting such a bouncy and melodic approach! It slightly reminds me of some KSHMR classics (like “Memories“), despite the aggressive signature bassline of the quintet! Catchy, catchy and catchy! The melody develops a complex pattern that adds a certain personality to the overall output, but with the presence of the somewhat undesirable strident vox in the backdrop.

So, GIANTS, TBR and OUTRAGE are a group of friends, who have some experience in the field and are in that “limbo” of the music… Developing and evolving a signature sound. I consider “Starting Over” a work in progress, an experimentation, and I’m curious to see what else they are going to bring to the table. Giving a short opinion about it was difficult, but I’m quite into this one. Delectable.
