Herobust – Dumb Lit

August 18, 20192 min read

• Entertaining festival banger
• A vocal that gets you in the mood, but becomes a bit predictable
• Segmented, experimental breakdown

Despite my relative ignorance in the genre, I am a loyal follower of Herobust. His style is unpredictable, explosive, sometimes too aggressive for my tastes but absolutely never dull.

“Dumb Lit” is the dubstep banger one can play around the end of the night to wake up whoever is getting tired. It’s a hymn, an encouragement to “get lit” (sigh), and having fun. It emanates this pleasurable sensation that I genuinely appreciate, thanks to a rather slow, yet dynamic structure. The shape-shifting essence of the production by the American artist is evident in the drop, where sudden growls get switched alternatively with vocal shots, distortions, and heavy basses. Herobust used his signature sound, delivering a clean and robust segment, capable of smashing dancefloors easily. I was a bit tired of hearing the same words from the vocal, unfortunately.

In the breakdown, the overall sensation is, well, fragmented. The vocal isn’t linear, and the 8-bit lead leaves the atmosphere very deficient. There is that game of sudden pauses that disappointed me initially, but after the third listen, I started to appreciate the intriguing idea behind it.

In short, “Dumb Lit” is a funny song, well-produced and a must for any party. I rarely get disappointed by the American crafter! Unfortunately, the breakdown and its segmentation may not convince everybody… I’m not saying that’s it’s a hit or miss, but I’m just warning you.

For sure, “Dumb Lit” deserves a listen.
