• Leaves bittersweet impression
• Long-awaited return to roots
• Signature-driven progressive drop
It seems that Alesso, after a pop phase that lasted for years, is back exploring the roots of progressive house… And, in the case of this latest remix, he’s mixing them with his endeared 2012 signature imprint! Today I’m introducing you to his “Sad Song” Remix, featuring the emotional vocal by TINI.
I won’t scream joyously to this miracle, as the remix gave me a shady sensation that Alesso is simply “tasting the water” of the progressive house scene. I even liked the original “Sad Song”, thanks to the stunning vocal performance and a solid bass, which reminded me of earlier vibrant and catchy songs from Alan Walker. In this rework, the breakdown lost that bassline, resulting in a downgraded, simple and rather “run-of-the-mill” structure (where the vocal still makes its great and valuable impression)… So I wasn’t really into it, from the first moment.
Then I must admit that my excitement doubled immediately when I heard THAT LEAD and THAT MELODY in the buildup. It was an instant nostalgic throwback for me. Successively and without delay, I got to the drop. I can’t pinpoint my exact feelings about it, because it’s somehow creative, but also doesn’t satisfy me entirely! Unfortunately, the cliché combination of old-school bassline and 2012 progressive lead clashes a bit too much for my tastes. The whole segment emanates delectable vibes, however at the same time, I felt that the Swedish producer himself wasn’t convinced about the schematics. And yes, we are still referencing about high-quality EDM.
The “Sad Song” remix, in conclusion, left me more puzzled than delighted. Alesso is clearly experimenting with old-school sounds, as heard in his progressive EP, and now he mixed them with his signature influence. I’m sure that something exceptional will come out, but presently there is more work to be done. The future seems promising, hence I’ll be keeping an eye out for the Swedish artist!
