• Creative, maybe a little too much
• Trance vibes, hardstyle, orchestral tones
• Two completely different vocals
Sub Zero Project is one of my favorite discoveries of 2018, a unique hardstyle duo that always manages to surprise and entertain me, and “The Contagion” marks the beginning of a great 2019.
I was excited about this review: the collaboration with the singer Christina Novelli (who had an outstanding performance and her voice fit well with the signature SBZ male vocal!) is rich in beguiling elements. Orchestral breakdown, trance influences, two completely different vocals continuously switching positions, emotional yet brutal drop… So many ideas!
That’s, however, the biggest problem of “The Contagion”: it’s so experimental that it sometimes loses its identity, with so many things going on. I don’t understand what the duo wanted to show in this production. If we consider it as a “demonstration of skill“, ignoring its whole concept, then we can easily admit that “The Contagion” is a great idea. My favorite element is the use of two different vocals, one by Novelli (sweet and delicate), transitioning in the male vocalist building up to climax before the drop. Strange idea, but it works, mainly thanks to the elegance of the solemn breakdown.
The drop has a SBZ kick and that particular lead, clearly trance-inspired, making the section particularly intriguing, even if, in my personal opinion, it wasn’t necessary. The trancey mood clashed a bit with the rest of the composition.
Nonetheless, “The Contagion” is creative, innovative and enjoyable. I’m curious to see if the hardstyle duo will develop more those ideas, at the moment I had the feeling that the full potential hasn’t been shown yet.
